The Living with and Beyond Cancer Project in Bolton

Posted on: 01/02/2018

As cancer survival rates continue to improve, more and more people are surviving for longer with or beyond cancer.   As a result a new scheme to support people affected by cancer is being set up in Bolton to make sure that everybody receives the personalised care and support they need, when they need it.

The aim is to: 'ensure that those living with and beyond cancer get the care and support they need to lead as healthy and active a life as possible, for as long as possible.' (National Cancer Survivorship Initiative, 2013).

The Macmillan Living With and Beyond Cancer Team is led by Astrid Greenberry, Macmillan Transformation Project Manager, who has been in post since June 2017. She has been joined by Pauline Whitby as the Macmillan Living With and Beyond Cancer Coordinator in January 2018.

The team are supporting the implementation of the Recovery Package due to be fully in place by 2019.  The Recovery Package comprises:

  • A Holistic Needs Assessment which will be offered at key points in the cancer journey.   The purpose of this discussion is to assess and address any needs or concerns.
  • A summary of treatment sent to the patient and their GP including information about side effects and contact numbers for help and advice (Treatment Summary).
  • The patient will have a Cancer Care Review 6 months after diagnosis which will be carried out in their GP surgery to assess any current information and support needs.
  • Patient education and support events (Health and Wellbeing Events) to signpost to available support.

Some of these interventions are already well established in Bolton, for example,  the Health and Wellbeing Events, whilst other elements need developing.

Key to the success of this project is that it is led by the experiences of those who have had or been affected by cancer and there are a number of opportunities to become involved in the project.

If you would like to find out more about the project or about opportunities to become involved please contact Astrid or Pauline on 01204 390390 Ext 4613 or via email Astrid.Greenberry@boltonft.nhs.uk and Pauline.Whitby@boltonft.nhs.uk
